Not all probiotics are the same
Today many probiotic products are available. But different probiotic cultures can have very different effects. A probiotic culture is defined by its genus, species and a designation (or trade name). For instance the genus of the probiotic culture in Actimel is Lactobacillus, the species is casei and its strain is DN 114001. Cultures of even the same probiotic species - L.casei cultures for instance - may be different from each other and you cannot assume that they will have the same benefits on health.
Not all of them are backed by evidence-based clinical trials. In order to exert their specific health benefits, probiotics must be 'alive' up to the end of shelf life and be resistant to the effects of stomach acids, so that they can reach the gut alive and in sufficient quantities. The effect of probiotic cultures at the gut level must then be demonstrated by scientific studies to prove that the probiotic product has a benefit on health. Actimel, which contains billions of exclusive probiotic L. casei cultures, is scientifically proven to meet these criteria.
