There are lots of little things you can do everyday to help ensure you enjoy life to the full this Winter. Here are our top tips
1. Eat well & stay hydrated
Making the right food choices can help strengthen your natural defences. It’s mainly about balance and variety. Try to choose lower fat foods and natural wholegrains such as wholegrain bread, cereals and pasta, which deliver sustained energy over a period of time. Try them, it really works! Plenty of fresh fruit and veg is a must - vegetables are a great source of fibre as well as other nutrients. Fish, nuts and dairy products can all help too.
Everyone knows that staying hydrated is important, but a lot of us are not drinking enough water. Drink before you’re thirsty, the more regularly you drink, the better you’ll feel for it. Aim for 2 to 2.5L of water every day.
Eat modest sized meals at regular intervals, and try to take time out to enjoy your food as often as possible. Eat three main meals a day and try snacking on fresh or dried fruit. Make sure you get your day off to a great start with a healthy breakfast. We know it can be hard to find time for it, but don’t forget that breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
2. Exercise and get outside!
It is tempting to stay in more when the days get shorter and colder. But it is important to ensure you get out and about whatever the weather, and exercise regularly. 30 minutes of moderate physical activity 5 times a week can make a big difference. And yes, simple activities like brisk walking, house cleaning or gardening all count! For more information on physical activity, log onto the HSE website at www.getirelandactive.ie.
Those with a current illness or condition should consult their doctor before commencing an exercise regime.
3. Stay Warm
We all know how unpredictable Irish weather can be, but that shouldn’t stop us from getting out there and enjoying ourselves. The trick is to be prepared for changeable weather no matter what you’re doing. Make sure to layer up to keep you warm and dry on those cold Winter days and have your rain gear ready for rainy days or sudden showers.
4. Keep hands clean
Keeping your hands clean is thought to be the simplest and most effective way to help prevent germs from being passed from one person to another. So don’t forget this simple little step.
5. Sleep well
The alarm always seems to go off too early... and then it's non-stop go, with school runs, work, phone calls, quick meals, 'me' time, 'them' time... and a short and sweet pillow interlude before it all starts again. Our busy lifestyle often means that we don’t get as much sleep as our body needs to recover from the day. But remember, snuggling up in your duvet and getting a good night’s sleep is one of the body’s great ways to repair and strengthen your defences naturally. An average of 8 hours a night is recommended, so get cosy and sleep well!
